Understanding Depression

Depression is much more than distress or normal suffering. It is an illness involving signs and symptoms that will last for weeks, months, or years if it is not recognised or appropriately treated.

The effects that depression has on a person can frequently lead to problems in the family, with friends, at work or at school.

Some symptoms are more common in certain age groups.

  • Behavioural issues may be seen in children
  • Youth may show signs of agitation and irritability
  • Older people may withdraw, be apathetic or have delusional ideas.

Depression is often accompanied by anxiety. Depression can often include physical symptoms.
